Jubilee celebrations, 2022 – what a wonderful weekend!

A very big thank you goes to all those hardworking people who made our village celebration so successful and memorable. From the lighting of the beacon on the Drift Track to the church service in the marquee, the weekend was a joyful celebration of local community and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The quiz, dog show, village show, stalls, teas, bar, games, etc, were the best ever, with a record number of people attending and enjoying themselves. It was a shame the cycle ride had to be cancelled for safety reasons because of heavy rain, although some 30 people still cycled the route anyway. It was also a shame that the band on Saturday evening was not so well supported, but there was the rival attraction of the Buckingham Palace concert on television, which attracted 11 million viewers!

Despite the weekend’s successes, this village event may not happen again if we can’t get more people to help organise it. Your village weekend committee, just 7 people, and the village show committee of just 4 people, need your help. Organisation takes time, effort and imagination, and a fair amount of hard work. We need to spread the load more widely: the more people who are involved, the less there is for any one person to do. Help is needed with planning, advertising, setting up tables, fencing and the stage. Other tasks such as waste disposal and collection, moving equipment, cooking, serving on the bar and in the café also need covering. These are background tasks, without which the weekend would not be a success. A link with the school would also be welcomed to help with the cycling event and to plan an event for children and young people.
