Jubilee Weekend Celebration, 2022
What a wonderful weekend!
A very big thank you goes to all those hardworking people who made our village celebration so successful and memorable. From the lighting of the beacon on the Drift Track to the church service in the marquee, the weekend was a joyful celebration of local community and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The quiz, dog show, village show, stalls, teas, bar, games, etc, were the best ever, with a record number of people attending and enjoying themselves. It was a shame the cycle ride had to be cancelled for safety reasons because of heavy rain, although some 30 people still cycled the route anyway. It was also a shame that the band on Saturday evening was not so well supported, but there was the rival attraction of the Buckingham Palace concert on television, which attracted 11 million viewers!
Despite the weekend’s successes, this village event may not happen again if we can’t get more people to help organise it. Your village weekend committee, just 7 people, and the village show committee of just 4 people, need your help. Organisation takes time, effort and imagination, and a fair amount of hard work. We need to spread the load more widely: the more people who are involved, the less there is for any one person to do. Help is needed with planning, advertising, setting up tables, fencing and the stage. Other tasks such as waste disposal and collection, moving equipment, cooking, serving on the bar and in the café also need covering. These are background tasks, without which the weekend would not be a success. A link with the school would also be welcomed to help with the cycling event and to plan an event for children and young people. If you would like to know more or are keen to offer assistance, please contact Gillian Pett (01223 843278, firstname.lastname@example.org).
Calling all Stapleford residents to support our fantastic Village Weekend, 3rd to 5th June 2022!
The Village Weekend is back, a little earlier in the year than usual but timed to coincide with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee extended weekend.
We kick off on Friday 3rd with a quiz night. Pavilion doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. The cost is £8/person, including a glass of wine or pint of beer. A fish and chip van will satisfy cravings during a break in proceedings (£10/person for cod and chips). Please try to book your table (parties of 8) and place your food order in advance by emailing email@example.com.
Saturday 4th June is a themed day celebrating the Jubilee, with a bouncy castle, tug-of-war, plenty of traditional stalls, an ice cream van, and a chance to learn some circus skills and toe-tap along to a samba band. The organising committee also has an ambitious plan to make our summer event lead by example by promoting environmental issues and products that can reduce our carbon footprint. There will be opportunities to learn more about solar panels, air and ground source heating, biofuels and other eco-friendly products from local specialist providers, plus representatives from sustainable food companies, CamCycle and environmental group 2G3S. We will also have craft stalls where the whole family can create items for their gardens.
The ever-popular gardening and handicraft classes will be back. This year the latter comprise a piece of homemade upcycled jewellery, a soft toy (a ‘Womble’, in keeping with the sustainability theme!), and a piece of graphic art (‘our future’). We’re also very much looking forward to a new item for the Village Show – a dog show, complete with professional judges. With pedigree and fun classes to enter, please register your dogs by 1pm, ready for judging to commence at 1.30pm. We hope to have a special guest joining the judging panel and awarding prizes, too.
On the evening of the 4th, a highly respected Cambridge band, The Lonely, will be playing until late. There’ll be a bar with draft beer/wine and BBQ food cooked to order. Tickets can be purchased on the door (£12), although if you can please book in advance (£10) through firstname.lastname@example.org.
Activities start at 10am on Sunday 5th June with the Tour de Stapleford. Bacon rolls will be provided for all who return… Cricket will start at 1pm, with an open air church service at 5.30pm concluding the event.
Card and cash payments will be accepted in all areas throughout the Village Weekend.
If anyone has an hour or so to spare over the Village Weekend and can help out, please contact Gillian Pett or Michael Gatward (email@example.com).
